The working definition of personal use is an individual who uses the software on a home computer. For such users the SoundMachine software is US$10 Shareware. This entitles you to use the software and future updates but without technical support. Previous versions have been released as Freeware but this has proved to be unworkable---the shear number of email and support requests being one major problem and commercial exploitation being another.
If your work place has a site license there is no need to pay the Shareware. We’re much more interested in arranging site licenses (with technical support). If you plan to send money and want details, send a short query to the email address below.
Finally, there is a final category where the Shareware fee need not be paid. This is when the software is made available on a licensed CD-ROM. If you have a CD-ROM and you are not sure whether it is licensed to distribute SoundMachine then a list of licensed CD-ROMs is available at the Web site below. We’d be very interested to know of illegal distributions of the software.
Commercial and Site Use:
Any usage that doesn’t fit under the “Personal Use” classification fits under this heading. A detailed account of licensing is given at the Web site below. This information is most relevant for commercial or educational institutions requiring site licenses or distribution licenses such as inclusion on a CD-ROM with a book or magazine. Under no circumstances can the software be distributed or used without permission and this means paying a fee.

Software Versions
This suite of software contains two versions of SoundMachine. Here we briefly explain the differences and make recommendations.
SoundMachine 2.2.2 (April 1995) contains only very minor modifications to Version 2.1 but facilitates playing of 16 bit AIFF sound files provided Apple's Sound Manager 3.0 or better is available in the system software (Versions 7.1 onwards) or as an extension. Sound Manager 3.1 is currently available from mid 1995 as a system extension. Version 2.2.2 of SoundMachine also fixes a bug with Help Balloons with the introduction of System 7.5.
SoundMachine 2.5.1 (December 1995) is a major rewrite of SoundMachine. It has a number of enhancements and a slicker interface. Many of the improvements are transparent to the user. WAVE uncompressed formats plus other formats and higher quality sound reproduction are now supported. There is a better sound queue handling facility and the user has greater flexibility in customizing the operation of SoundMachine to learn new sound formats (within reason). There is no recording facility. Since the recording facility in the past relied on the System software there was no way of guarding against various users related problems that could arise. If recording is desired then SoundMachine 2.2.2 can be used. To avoid ambiguity between the two versions of the program the signature of SoundMachine 2.5 is now 'SNdm' rather than the signature of SoundMachine 2.2.2 which is 'SNDM'. Therefore, the two versions can happily coexist on the same computer.
A manual for SoundMachine exists in two formats: Adobe Acrobat™ pdf and plain text (no pictures). Note that Adobe Acrobat™ Reader 2.0.1 is recommended and can be downloaded, subject to Adobe’s licensing terms from:
